Seneca College Markham Campus
Ken Fukushima – Project Principal
In this case, “thinking outside the box” was really re-thinking the inside of an existing box. Transforming a 20 year old former insurance headquarters building into a new campus for up to 3,500 post-secondary students started with turning the conventional office central core plan inside out. Re-routing circulation to the building perimeter with lounge spaces, enables interaction and orientation within the vertical campus, and makes the public places on the upper floors bright with natural light. The new 8 storey, transparent stair tower at the front helps present the building as Seneca’s own.
