Genji’s Room

Ink and gouache on paper
Size (each triptych): 36” x 72”

This room is inspired by characters from the classic Genji Monogatari (The Tale of Genji), written by Murasaki Shikibu (ca 978 – ca 1031).

The 4 triptychs form the sides of a room. By combining multiple patterns in sequences and transformations within an orthogonal structure, the drawings complete a story in which the imagery of each panel within a triptych is connected, and attached to the other triptychs in the series.

As with a Möbius strip, there is no beginning, end, top or bottom, and each panel and triptych is related to its context – adjacent and opposite.
